Buffalo LinkStation Pro

I’ve just bought a Buffalo LinkStation Pro box to store all my files and it’s great.

Now I don’t have a desktop PC and am relying on my laptop all the time I thought it’d be wise to invest in some external storage for it. Not that I’m careless or anything, but I can see me being a little stupid and doing something silly with the laptop – be it getting drunk and leaving it in a pub or just my general clumsy self and dropping it.

The box itself runs a Linux distribution, which is good news as I soon found out I can’t do what I wanted to with this box. Although out of the box it works superbly as a general NAS server – with lightning-fast Gigabit Ethernet and Jumbo Frames support – it doesn’t connect to my Xbox 360, which was the main reason I went for a NAS device rather than a cheaper USB2 system. To be fair, this is actually my own fault – I knew that the Xbox 360′s Media Center support relied on the Windows Media Connect stuff so I really should have realised that the same applied to the streaming capabilities.

However as I mentioned the box runs Linux – which means when I get some spare time I’m going to have a hack around with the OS to try and get it to connect. I’m certain it’s possible – I just need to work out how to do it!

Hey Rob, just found this post via Google. Did you ever get this working? I was interested in picking up the same box. I don’t expect it’d connect directly to the 360, but I was thinking if I mapped a drive to it and shared it that would work.

Drop me an e-mail, I’d love to hear.

    Hi Tim,

Unfortunately no, I never got this working the way I wanted it to. The way I’m currently doing it is to add the shared folders to the media library on my Vista installation, with the Xbox 360 then connecting to Vista to stream the media from.

Certainly not the most elegant solution but it works.

You might want to wait a few months for Windows Home Server to be released; I’m sure when that comes out there will be a glut of low profile NAS boxes, all of which will offer streaming to the Xbox 360 natively.

Hey Rob, I’ve got the same Linkstation and am having a hard time getting my network to recognize it…I’ve tried connecting it directly to my wireless ADSL router as well as directly to the NIC on my laptop. I can see the network activity LED flashing on both ends, but can never access the Linkstation. I installed the registry hack that Buffalo has on their support pages, but still no luck.

    Setup:
Dell Inspiron 700m & Sony VAIO (can’t see it on either)
Creative 8426 Wireless ADSL Router (not my first choice, by the way)
    Buffalo Linkstation Pro
    Windows Vista Ultimate

Any ideas as to what could be going on here?

Hi there. Also got a linkstation LS-250GL which has worked superbly with my XP laptop and desktop, and 2 additional USB drives. However just got a Vista PC and cannot persuade it (Media Center) to add the folders to the media Library – it just reports it can’t find any shared folders on the network.
It can access the NAS and contents via Explorer fine though.
    Any hints?
    thanks in advance!

    Hey guys,

I’ve got a linkstation Pro and my ps3 can read the videos from my linkstation, you just need to install twonkymedia on your nas server :

Go to linkstationwiki.net for how to’s. You can even install a torrent client. add your own script. I love this box.

    Axel.

You can also use ushare on the Terastation. I got it running on mine, and unlike twonky, it’s free. I got it serving up my movies and music to my 360. The 360 in itself is particular with media, it likes mp4 to be renamed m4v.

Has anyone had success streaming movies directly from LinkStation Pro Duo to PS3 or XBOX 360 via a router/LAN setup?
